Vulnerable to Unhappiness
A quick something to chew on.
Quote from John Eldridge in Walking with God. He’s talking about happiness. I agree, God desires a happiness and joy for us to live out. One that is unconditional. However, you are very likely a person who is conditionally happy. Me too. And not on the condition of our joy in Christ, but rather our stuff and circumstances on this planet.
Simply put: “As long as our happiness is tied to the things we can lose, we are vulnerable.”
Makes sense. Happiness in anything other than the Kingdom is temporary. If we lose it, we are unhappy. So, we try to pile on the hits. We become vulnerable to misery in chasing a quick fix. We become addicted to the feeling. We’ll do almost anything to provoke a bit of happiness. But it wears off and you’re stuck in an addictive behavior craving fleeting episodes of happiness.
God offers the gift of unending happiness and joy to His followers. The same concept as the “living water” Jesus offers the woman at the well. (John 4:1-42) Why do we settle for a cheap hit that quickly fades, leaving us fiending again? Life really doesn’t have to be this way. God offers the everlasting alternative, we place our satisfaction on Him. Just God and His Kingdom.
